MY STORY

Several years ago, with the children off on their own, I wondered where my life might be heading next.  I had heard age 50 was the magic year to let go of inhibitions and really start to live.  I was waiting for an epiphany.  Was something going to present itself?  Seemingly, nothing happened . . .

A year later, missing the fun of preparing food for the family, I called the Hillsborough Farmer’s Market and signed up to bake.  I remembered how my son sold his sandwiches in high school to the highest bidder.  I thought I might be onto something with this bread.  I would sell my wonderful bread.

Since the days of ‘Simply Sourdough’ a transformation was waiting to take place. It turns out I am gluten intolerant. But, that can’t be, I am a baker!! It was, indeed, true. The bakery went through a major change and we emerged ready to service our new clientele.

Along this path, I found my passion – I love to bake, especially gluten free!

Not many classes exist for gluten free baking, so our kitchen has turned into a library of gluten free information. Books on the flours, methods, hints, and all things necessary to be successful grace our countertop.

At this time I am working on a natural leavened gluten free bread, hopefully that will rise without yeast. The trials continue.

Every Friday and early Saturday morning busy hands are at work warmed by the ovens. The baked good aroma fills the air. We pack up the goods and prepare to get them to the market.

Saturday morning is more than the market.  It’s a four a.m. start to arrive with fresh baked pastries and prepare to greet our customers.  Showing off ‘what’s new’ this week is a highlight.  As soon as one market ends, I am planning for the next week.     What fun!

I am humbled by the people who support my endeavor.  I thank them for allowing me to be a part of their lives and look forward to catching up with them each week.  It is community.

UPDATE... MAY 2011: Our Bakery is Now Gluten Free!

Check us out at the market.

You can find me at the Hillsborough Farmer’s Market every Sat. from 8:00-12:00 in the Home Depot Parking Lot.
